Formalizing a long-standing partnership may only be a formality, but it is important. On Wednesday, the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Lenval foundation and the Antibes hospital thus ratified an old bond of trust.
The resulting roadmap shares a common objective: improving the provision of care for the youngest. The director of Antibes hospital, Bastien Ripert, details the forms this mutual support takes.
Due to lack of staff, in particular, hospitals are under pressure. How does this partnership help you hold on?
If medical resources are lacking, specialties, such as pediatrics, are also very impacted. But we must maintain proximity with the population, we cannot close services. We are thus consolidating our medical offer by creating shared positions with Lenval. This also allows young doctors to concretely understand several forms of exercises in two hospital structures.
If the emergencies of Antibes receive 10,000 visits annually, those of Lenval rise to 50,000. How do you go regarding rebalancing this gap?
Lenval redirects certain patients to Antibes. We are less pressurized and thus benefit from a better reception capacity for the lightest cases. This organization notably proved its worth during the bronchiolitis crisis last winter.
Conversely, the Antibes hospital redirects the most serious cases to Lenval. Ultimately, do you want to be able to handle more severe emergencies?
Very specific treatments requiring Lenval’s expertise and equipment only represent 10% of patients. Although we are mainly specialized in general pediatrics, we also have a neurology, gastroenterology and pulmonology department. We plan to have a surgeon on site once every two weeks. Because, for the moment, we do not support operations on children weighing less than 30 kg.
What is your margin for progress in terms of child psychiatry to improve the mental health of young people?
We have day facilities but do not have a full hospitalization offer unlike Lenval. With the help of the ARS [agence régionale de santé]we will work together to consolidate our child psychiatry teams.
