Thanks to the transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon chips, which began in 2020, Apple has significantly improved the performance and energy efficiency of its Macs. As a result, over the last two years, it has been accepted that to have good performance and good battery life, it is better to use a recent Mac, rather than a Windows PC.
In 2024, the situation is changing, in particular thanks to the arrival of a new component supplied by Qualcomm which will allow PC manufacturers to compete with the performance of Macs: the Snapdragon X Elite chip. During the presentation of this chip in October, Qualcomm highlighted its superiority compared to Apple Silicon’s M2 chip.
Since then, Apple has released a new generation of chips for its Macs. But Qualcomm continues to claim that machines using the Snapdragon X Elite chip will be able to compete with new machines using the M3 chip. According to our colleagues at Digital Trends, Qualcomm claims that the Oryon processor, used by the Snapdragon X Elite chip, is 21% faster than the M3 chip for multi-core performance.
Arrival in 2024
Unfortunately, at the moment, no machine using this new component is yet available. In fact, PCs equipped with the Snapdragon
In the meantime, Qualcomm’s claims are sometimes viewed with a certain amount of skepticism. For example, the Macrumors site recalls in an article that performance will not only depend on the quality of the processor, but also on the thermal profile of each PC that will use the Snapdragon X Elite. Indeed, a poorly cooled machine can slow down.
But at the same time, a more advanced cooling system will tend to increase energy consumption.
For its part, Qualcomm already warns that the experience of Macs and PCs using the Snapdragon X Elite will not be the same, since Macs use macOS, while machines running Snapdragon X Elite use Windows. “[…] but in terms of hardware, which is the only thing we can control, it’s good hardware”and indicated Qualcomm.
In any case, the message is clear, in 2024, thanks to the Snapdragon And for its part, Intel has also launched a new generation of processors capable of to overshadow the competition.
- Thanks to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip, PC makers will be able to offer machines that rival Macs
- During the launch, Qualcomm compared the performance of this component with that of the M2 chip
- Today, the company also compares the performance of the Snapdragon X Elite with that of the M3
