Do Netflix subtitles have transphobic overtones? This is what some Internet users on Twitter seem to denounce, accusing the streaming platform of not respecting the French version of “They” by translating it as “Elle” or “Il” rather than “Iel” in the series. Glow up, available since August 19 on Netflix. As a reminder, the pronoun “iel”, a contraction of “he” and “she” was added in October 2021 to the Le Robert dictionary. The word is used in particular by non-binary people who do not recognize themselves in any gender, neither masculine nor feminine. However, if the pronoun “iel” is well used in the VF, it is the VO subtitled in French which poses a problem as explained by a twittos: “Why when Glow Up takes the step of giving the pronouns of the candidates does Netflix allow itself to misgender them in the subtitles?”adding: “It makes no sense: the VO says “they”, the VO subtitles say “they”, the VF says “iel” but the VF subtitles say “elle”.

In addition to the pronoun problem, some words are downright badly chosen as another person points out: “In the series Glow Up, a genderfluid transgender candidate explains that he uses make-up to fight once morest his dysphoria which gnaws at him, because his “disease” – French translation – often causes seizures”. The term disease poses a problem here. It remains to be seen whether the problem comes from Netflix or from the translators…
