On the eve of Christmas, The Vaca Muerta region, epicenter of the oil industry in Neuquén, experienced a new earthquake, as reported by the National Institute for Seismic Prevention (Inpres). The seismic event had a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale and was recorded near the La Amarga Chica area. Ten days ago, two earthquakes had been recorded in the same day.
The Induced Seismicity Observatory shared a statement detailing that The earthquake occurred at 07:18 a.m. on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at a depth of 8 km. The epicenter was located approximately 38 km north of Añelo. In addition, it was highlighted that a set of fractures is operating near the epicenter, in the La Amarga Chica area.
The Observatory’s statement highlighted that this earthquake raises eight the number of seismic events induced by hydraulic fracturing in the month of December. Furthermore, this particular earthquake represented the highest magnitude among those recorded during the last quarter.
Induced seismicity in Vaca Muerta is the subject of constant monitoring due to the hydraulic fracturing activity associated with the exploitation of hydrocarbons in the region.
This new event reinforced the need to continue studying and understanding the relationship between human activity and seismic movements in this important oil zone.
