Security researchers have discovered that iPhones updated to iOS 17 can be hacked via Bluetooth with a Flipper Zero device. Ars Technica notably reported that researcher Jeroen van der Ham was the victim of an exploit during a train ride: his phone then displayed several pop-ups before restarting. Van der Ham then discovered that the attacker – who was traveling on the same train – was using a Flipper Zero device with custom firmware to send a combination of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) alerts to iPhones running iOS 17. FYI , Flipper Zero is a small orange and white plastic gadget with a 1.4″ screen, quite similar to a child’s toy. In reality, it is a versatile hacking tool, since it communicates with devices below 1 GHz such as old garage doors, RFID devices, NFC cards, infrared devices and of course Bluetooth devices. These attacks can, among other things, also affect iPads.

Furthermore, similar attack can also affect Android devices and Windows laptops. For example, BleepingComputer reported that Bluetooth spam attacks on the Samsung Galaxy can generate an endless amount of pop-ups. To protect yourself from this, you should turn off the Nearby Share notification. However, if you have an iPhone, to protect yourself from these attacks, you should turn off Bluetooth (while waiting for updates from Apple).
