This is why you shouldn’t use your cell phone before going to sleep

MEXICO CITY.- According to the cybersecurity company, NordVPN, “Mexicans are the ones who use electronic devices the most from bed.” Through a study carried out in 16 countries, the company found that in Mexico, 97% of the people surveyedagreed to use the cell phone while they are lying down and they use it to fall asleep.

Given this, it has been warned that this can affect the quality of sleep, in addition to putting users’ digital privacy at risk.

Why you shouldn’t use your cell phone before going to sleep

Adrianus Warmenoven, cybersecurity consultant, explained through the study that the use of cell phones in a relaxed environment can put users at risk since are less attentive “to online security measures and the respective safe behavior.”

The cybersecurity company claims that the 75% of Mexicans look at their cell phone while they are lying down to scroll through social networkswhile 64% use it to watch videos on platforms like YouTube and 63% to watch their favorite series. On the other hand, messaging apps are also part of users’ nighttime routines. In fact, 56% of respondents take advantage of the last minutes of the day to check messages from family and friends, as well as checking their inbox. And although for many it is an everyday occurrence, for Adrianus Warmenhoven, it represents a latent risk for users.

“When people are relaxed, They may not notice suspicious activity on their devices, such as a stranger accessing it or strange pop-up messages appearing on the screen. Sharing a bed with your device can end up meaning it shares its data with hackers,” he says. It’s also bad for sleep.

According to National Institute of Public HealthMexicans sleep around 7 and a half hours. These hours are affected by stress, long work days and cell phones.

Although 82% use it to try to fall asleep, The reality is that the content consumed here can be harmful. For example, 50% of respondents said they often find bad news and negative content while scrolling, this is called “doomscrolling,” which can affect the user’s mood. Given this, the security company recommends avoiding using cell phones and any other device before going to sleep.
