The 78th edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen has started! With Wout van Aert, Mads Pedersen and Jasper Philipsen leaving, a number of top players are competing once morest each other. – Arnaud Démare was on the list of participants for Dwars door Vlaanderen, but did not start. The French sprinter is suffering from severe fatigue and is taking a rest period.
– The 78th edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen – on the Roeselare market – started at 12.30 pm.
– A first escape attempt by six riders was quickly nipped in the bud by the peloton.
– The first quitter of the day is Milan Fretin. The fast Belgian from Cofidis still started, but applied the brakes very early.
– A leading group of eleven riders receives the blessing of the peloton. The names? Casper Pedersen, Dries De Pooter, Mathias Norsgaard, Donavan Grondin, Dries De Bondt, Niklas Märkl, Amund Grøndahl Jansen, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Jonas Abrahamsen, Thomas Gachignard and Victor Vercouillie.
– Bad news once more for Visma | Lease a Bike: Jan Tratnik has not recovered enough from his fall in Ghent-Wevelgem and had to give up following 80 kilometers.
– In the preliminary final there was a big crash in an elite group with many favorites in the descent towards the Kanarieberg. The biggest victims: Wout van Aert, Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven and Biniam Girmay. Only Pedersen might continue, the rest were evacuated and had to fear for the rest of the spring.
– The remainder of the elite group, including Tiesj Benoot and Matteo Jorgenson, was able to continue and joined the remains of the early breakaway regarding 40 kilometers from the finish. The peloton then followed at 1.30 minutes.
