The consumption of chewing gum has become one of our daily habits, and it may be taken for granted in order to get rid of the smell of food or before meeting friends, but only a few know the health problems and disorders that it can cause.

The “Top Santé” website offers some tips before chewing gum, according to the newspaper, “Al-Bayan”.

Teeth consist of a mixture of components that obstruct cavities caused by decay, as the dental composition consists of 50 percent of the metal silver, tin, copper and zinc, and 50 percent of mercury. The friction that occurs while chewing gum a lot, damages these components.

Therefore, it is advisable not to consume a lot of chewing gum, as chewing gum can also cause disorders in the lower jaw and temples, which are subjected to great pressure during the chewing process, as well as cause pain in the head, teeth and ears.

Chewing gum before eating is considered a way to open the appetite, but a study published in the American Journal of Health Issues “Eating Behaviours” confirms that chewing gum is not beneficial to health because it causes extreme hunger that may encourage eating a lot and eating fast food. Therefore, experts advise to avoid chewing gum before eating.

In this context, experts warn of the complications of excessive chewing gum consumption on the function of the intestines, as it can in some cases lead to disturbances in the work of the large intestine, or what is known as “irritable bowel syndrome.” This leads to abdominal pain and cramps, in addition to severe bloating.

In other cases, it also causes intestinal gas.
