After the blow of the deaths of Bill and Frank, Joel and Ellie are back on a journey through the apocalyptic USA in the latest (fourth) episode of the series The Last of Us. On the way to Kansas, the two deepen their friendship through a joke book that Ellie found and uses to make Joel laugh. However, she still doesn’t tell him anything regarding the gun that she now carries with her and with which she poses in front of a mirror.
On the drive, Joel also explains to Ellie what Tommy is all regarding. Joel’s brother already has
always wanted to save the world and has therefore joined various groups. After the army and the group that Joel met Tess through, Tommy became part of the Fireflies, although Joel is no longer sure if his brother is still with them. That worries him. And he shares his credo with Ellie: no matter how dangerous the infected are, the real threat in the apocalypse is still humans. How right he can be becomes apparent when he and Ellie arrive in Kansas City.
The Last of Us: Hinterhalt in Kansas City
There they find out that much of the city is locked down. Joel is struggling through the streets in the car when a young man suddenly yells for help. Ellie asks if they should help him, but Joel suspects the calls for help are an ambush. It costs Joel and Ellie their car, but at least not their lives.
As Joel and Elli hide from their new enemies, the viewer learns who is behind the group they set out to kill: a guerrilla force led by a woman named Kathleen. They are on the hunt for two people named Henry and Sam and not even a hole full of walkers can stop Kathleen from bringing them down.
Joel and Ellie meanwhile have a talk because Ellie used her gun to
to shoot a man who had pinned Joel to the ground. When Joel learns that this wasn’t the first person Ellie has hurt, he decides to at least teach her how to use a gun properly. The pair’s new goal is the top of a 45-story building so they can get an overview and find their way out of the city.
Halfway there, Joel loses his strength and he and Ellie look for a place to stay for the night. Here, Ellie even manages to make Joel laugh with one of her jokes. But just a few hours later, the two are once more in mortal danger. Ellie wakes up Joel, who finds two gun muzzles pointed at him and Ellie. Fans of the games and attentive viewers should already know who the two people behind it are.
After the last episode became very emotional, “Please hold onto my hand” mainly serves as a preparation for the upcoming episodes and brings the journey of Ellie and Joel back into the foreground. For the first time there are no flashbacks either, only a few bits of information regarding Ellie and Joel’s opponents. Next week will show how this preparation sequence pays off. Everyone who knows the template knows: It might be exciting and tragic.
