The future of wearables may well be at your fingertips. As the market turns to connected rings as alternatives to watches and bracelets, Apple seems to be preparing a new product. Their latest patent filing reveals a smart ring not focused on health, but on controlling your Apple devices.

Oura Smart Thing

Rings are the next big thing in wearables. They offer a discreet and elegant alternative to connected bracelets and watches. Samsung is already on the verge of announcing its connected ring, and Chinese alternatives already exist.

But the big surprise comes from Apple, which seems to have something entirely new in store.

L’Apple Smart Ring ?

Apple files numerous patents, and the latest patent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows that they could be a game changer again with a connected ring.

But this ring is not intended for health monitoring like others in the market. Instead, it focuses on a completely different and perhaps more innovative aspect.

According to the patent, the Apple Smart Ring is designed as a control device for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. This concept would allow for a new level of fine control and interaction with Apple devices.

The design of the ring includes a structure consisting of an inner ring and an outer ring. The outer ring can be rotated or tilted, allowing the user to control different aspects of their devices, such as the volume of the AirPods Pro.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this potential Apple Smart Ring is the integration of biometric sensors. These sensors would allow the ring to recognize the user and automatically unlock the connected devices, as the Apple Watch already does for the Mac.

Another variant presented in the patent shows two rings worn on the same finger, making it possible to evaluate the movements of this finger. This feature could open up new possibilities in the fields of gesture control and augmented reality. The ring could also be equipped with a haptic feedback function.

Just a patent for now…

It is important to note that this patent does not guarantee that the Apple Smart Ring will see the light of day. As is often the case with patent filings, this just shows that Apple is working on the concept internally.
