This is the most detailed map of the Milky Way that exists

Using this interactive map you will be able to investigate the Milky Way with the highest level of detail.

Fully investigating the Milky Way is a reality thanks to DECaPS

Despite great advances in science, many mysteries remain undiscovered regarding the Milky Way and some nearby galaxies. We talk regarding the galaxy in which the Solar System is immersed and, therefore, human life, which increasingly raises more doubts to people. To explore it, it is usually necessary to use large caliber telescopes that allow you to observe all the stars, something that is not available to everyone.

One of the most recent projects related to the Milky Way is DECaPS. Initially, the purpose of this project was to investigate dark energy in depth, but during the process it has turned out to be necessary take several samples over the Milky Way, which have been mapped and published online so that anyone can explore what they need.

With this online map you can explore the Milky Way at your leisure

As we mentioned, thanks to DECaPS 2 project you have the opportunity to fully explore the Milky Way. you just have to access the web page enabled for it and you can move between the different stars and bodies as you need. You have the option to zoom in or out, as well as change map data using the list of options that appear on the right side of the website. Other basic parameters such as brightness or contrast can also be modified.

DECaPS Milky Way Map

By accessing the DECaPS website you will be able to analyze the Milky Way

The map in question collect more than 3 trillion items, making it the most complete map and precise image of the Milky Way galaxy that has been taken so far. For this, we have used the Víctor M. Blanco telescope located in Chile. The map is part of the Dark Energy Camera Plane Survey (DECaPS) project, for which a first exploration was already carried out in 2017 and a second one with a higher level of detail has now been published.

Observing the stars individually is not such a simple task for telescopes, but applying multiple techniques such as near-infrared observation a fairly clear and sharp image of the entire Milky Way has been obtained. There are many data that appears on the map interactive, designed for the most professional, although anyone can access to explore at their own pace.

Through the controls you will have the option of investigate the entire Milky Way as you wishwith all its details. Maybe you can even find a graveyard in the Milky Way if you explore deeper, or take snapshots of certain parts of the galaxy.
