Long before being the video game giant that we all know, Nintendo was a small family business from Kyoto, a past illustrated today with one of the company’s oldest advertisements. A real relic, shared on social networks.
The oldest Nintendo commercial
Many fans of the company already know this, but remember that originally, Nintendo had nothing to do with video games. Created at the end of the 19th century by Fusajirō Yamauchi, Nintendo was in fact a small family business dedicated to the manufacture of Japanese playing cards, Hanafuda. The BIg N empire was built on its playing cards that the firm began to sell internationally at the beginning of the last century, and it was necessary to wait nearly 80 years for the emergence of the first video games so that the small artisan of Kyoto turns to this market.
This relatively famous past is the subject of a real cult by the firm’s unconditional fans. who passionately collect the rare Nintendo playing cards that can still be found. And today, a new relic bears witness to this past: an advertisement dating from 1894! This advertisement, present in a book dedicated to Kyoto, would also be one of the oldest advertisements of the firm. Above it is a drawing of the company’s first store, a drawing that can also be seen on many boxes of playing cards produced at the time.
From small family business to video game giant
Today, the beginnings of the firm have obviously taken a back seat. Nintendo has become the video game giant that we all know, a real juggernaut that completely dominates the market. Recently, the firm also shared its results for the first part of the 2024 fiscal year. And it must be admitted that once once more, Nintendo is positioned far ahead of its competitors. After almost eight years of service, the Nintendo Switch has sold nearly 132 million copies, including 6.84 million sold in 2023.
Dizzying figures, which also concern video games. The Legend of Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom has sold 19.5 million copies and the firm, despite the few entries in its catalog, still has 16 games which have exceeded one million copies sold this year. With the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder not long ago and the upcoming arrival of the remake of Super Mario RPGthere is no doubt that Big N will once more explode the meters by the end of the fiscal year.
