Last year, Samsung Electronics ranked among the foreign companies that filed the most patent applications in Taiwan for the first time.

According to a report by Taiwan’s Central News Agency on the 10th, citing an announcement from Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Samsung Electronics applied for 978 patents in Taiwan last year, a 45% increase from 2022. With this, Samsung Electronics became the first foreign company in Taiwan to apply for the most patents. All except one are invention patents.

According to Taiwanese law, patents are classified into three categories: inventions, utility models, and designs, of which invention patents are considered the most important in terms of new technology.

Following Samsung Electronics, American semiconductor equipment company Applied Materials applied for 779 patents in Taiwan last year, ranking second among foreign companies. This is a 12% decrease from 2022.

They were followed by Qualcomm of the United States, Tokyo Electron of Japan, and Nitto Denko of Japan, and Coupang ranked 5th with 454 cases, a 222% increase from 2022.

The company that applied for the most patents in Taiwan last year was TSMC, Taiwan’s largest foundry (semiconductor consignment manufacturing) company, which applied for 1,956 patents and ranked first for eight consecutive years. This is the highest ever and a 28% increase from 2022.

Liang Cheng-wei, director of the Intellectual Property Office of Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, said, “TSMC and Samsung Electronics’ efforts to strengthen their patent portfolio in Taiwan show that Taiwan has become a hub for the global semiconductor industry.”
