What project did the French science fiction writer describe long before it became a reality?

Science fiction literature has attracted the attention of readers since its inception. The pictures of the future that the authors described in their works either delighted their contemporaries or aroused skepticism and laughter in them. It also happened that writers, without knowing it, predicted innovative ideas and projects.

Jules Verne and the Trans-Siberian Railway

Science fiction authors often “predict” the future in their works. Ideas that seemed impossible to their contemporaries later become everyday reality. This happened with many of the fictional inventions and projects mentioned in the novels of Jules Verne.

The French writer, whom most readers know from the adventure works “The Children of Captain Grant,” “The Mysterious Island,” “The Fifteen-Year-Old Captain,” wrote many science fiction stories.

In some of them he anticipated real discoveries and inventions.

One of these predictions can be found in the novel “Claudius Bombarnac,” the name of which is little known to the general public. The book tells the story of a journalist from the newspaper “Nineteenth Century”, who, on instructions from the editor, goes on a journey along the Trans-Asian Highway.

The highway, described by Jules Verne, originates in the port of Uzun-Ada on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea and ends in Beijing. During his voyage, Claudius Bombarnak meets a variety of people – from a German baron to a stowaway Romanian – and gets into adventures.

The novel was written in 1893, two years following the start of construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The project of the world’s longest railway seemed somewhat unreal to the people of that time. It is not surprising that people spoke regarding him with extreme skepticism.

Nevertheless, the Trans-Siberian Railway was built, even if it took exactly 25 years. The length of the grandiose highway was 8.3 thousand kilometers. The length is not the only record of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

It passes through the territory of two continents at once – Europe and Asia; regarding 90 cities are located along the highway.

In the novel “Claudius Bombarnac,” Jules Verne described a large-scale project that was subsequently implemented, despite the doubts of skeptics. True, the writer did not have a chance to find out that he predicted the creation of the longest highway in the world – Verne died in 1905.
