PALESTINIAN prisoners in Israel’s Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank receive water for only 45 minutes a day, a Palestinian commission revealed on Sunday (18/8).
“General conditions in Israeli prisons remain difficult and complex. They are getting worse,” the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission said in a statement, as reported by Anadolu, Monday (19/8).
The commission said water was available to detainees at the detention facility for only 45 minutes each day. “Electricity was cut off from 10 p.m. until midday the following day, while the food provided was poor in both quantity and quality,” it added.
The commission said some detainees were “beaten and abused repeatedly, some of whom were attacked while going to see their lawyers.”
“All prisoners have experienced significant weight loss due to (Israel’s) starvation policy,” he added.
Ibrahim Najajreh, who heads the commission’s office in Hebron, said there are at least 1,500 Palestinian prisoners in Ofer Prison.

“Every prisoner has to make the best use of the available water for drinking and fulfilling ablution and bathing needs, as there are no storage facilities,” he told Anadolu.
A joint statement from the commission and the Palestinian Prisoners Society estimated that more than 10,100 Palestinians have been detained by the Israeli army in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.
At least 635 Palestinians were also killed and nearly 5,400 others injured by Israeli army gunfire in the occupied territories during the same period, according to the Health Ministry.
In a major advisory opinion on July 19, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land unlawful and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (I-2)
