When does the draw take place?
The draw for the World Cup groups will take place at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in the capital of host country Qatar. The start is at 6 p.m. Swiss time (7 p.m. in Qatar). The draw is live in the stream and in the ticker at Blick.
How many participants are certain and who is still missing?
29 of 32 teams are already qualified. Two of the remaining three tickets will be awarded in the intercontinental playoffs. On the one hand Peru plays once morest Australia or the United Arab Emirates and on the other hand Costa Rica plays once morest New Zealand. The last ticket will be awarded in Europe. The play-off semi-final between Ukraine and Scotland has been postponed, with the winner then meeting Wales in a World Cup bid. All games will take place in June 2022.
How many pots are there?
There are four pots with eight teams each, from which eight groups of four are formed for the World Cup. The Fifa world ranking list as of March 31 is decisive for the division into the pots. Only Qatar are seeded as hosts regardless of their position in Pot 1. The three teams that qualify via the remaining playoffs automatically go into pot 4.
What are the pots like?
Pot 1: Qatar (hosts), Belgium, Brazil, France, Argentina, England, Spain, Portugal
Pot 2: Denmark, Holland, Germany, Mexico, USA, SwitzerlandCroatian, Uruguay
Pot 3: Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, South Korea, Tunisia
Pot 4: Canada, Cameroon, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Ukraine/Scotland/Wales, Peru/Australia/United Arab Emirates, Costa Rica/New Zealand.
What are the draw rules?
First the group heads from pot 1 are drawn, then the teams from pot 2, then pot 3 and finally from pot 4. The rule applies that two teams from the same continental federation cannot be drawn into the same group. For example, Argentina (Pot 1) cannot be in the same group as Uruguay (Pot 2).
The European teams are exempt from this rule, as they have the most participants in the World Cup tournament with a total of 13. The rule here is that a maximum of two teams from Europe may be drawn into the same group. Switzerland (Pot 2) can join the defending champion France (Pot 1) in the group, but following that Serbia (Pot 3), for example, should no longer be in this group.
Qatar has already been confirmed as the head of Group A and, as usual, will host the opening game.
Who is responsible for Switzerland’s fate?
Numerous football legends are given the honor of drawing the groups. These include the German Lothar Matthäus (61, world champion 1990) or the Brazilian Cafu (51), who became world champion with the Seleçao in both 1994 and 2002. Also in the pots are Adel Ahmed Malallah (Qatar), Rabah Madjer (Algeria), Tim Cahill (Australia), Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria), Ali Daei (Iran) and Bora Milutinovic (Serbia), who died in the 1960s Completed 25 games for FC Winterthur.
The draw will be moderated by US national player Carli Lloyd (39), who has played 316 times, as well as Jermaine Jenas (39), who played 21 games for the English national team, and British-Jamaican sports journalist Samantha Johnson (30).
Do you already know the start times following the draw?
Unlike previous tournaments, it is not clear immediately following the ceremony who will play where and when. As the distances between the stadiums in Qatar are quite short, Fifa wants to remain flexible and first check which match times are best for which nations, depending on TV viewers and the local fans. The schedule will be announced on Saturday. (che)
