As of April 1st, the tobacco tax will be increased once more. Cigarette makers will increase their prices throughout the month.
On April 1st, the tobacco tax will be increased once more throughout Austria. For this reason, prices will rise over the course of the month – consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets once more. The current price plans of the wholesalers are not yet available, but last year the tobacco tax brought in around 2.1 billion euros, in 2020 it was around 1.99 billion euros.
The prices increase every year. Anyone who buys a pack of cigarettes from next month will have to pay around 20 cents more.
Prices are constantly increasing
For every pack of cigarettes sold in Austria, the state receives regarding 77 percent of the sales price in the form of taxes, the rest goes to manufacturers, wholesalers and tobacconists. On average, a pack cost 5.34 euros last year. Cigarette prices have been rising continuously for years. In 2011, the package still cost an average of 3.95 euros. With the increase in tobacco tax in the new year, there will be a price increase once more this year.
