THE Badminton World Federation (BWF) has issued an official statement regarding the death of Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie while competing in the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships.

In an official statement, uploaded on Tuesday (2/7), BWF said it has a set of medical guidelines and instructions. However, how to implement the protocol and medical practices is returned to each governing body that hosts the tournament.

“Although the BWF Asia Junior Championships falls under the jurisdiction of Badminton Asia, BWF has a set of medical guidelines and instructions that can be used by other governing bodies (regional or national) hosting BWF-sanctioned tournaments. However, how these medical protocols and practices are implemented at the event venue is up to each governing body,” BWF said in their official statement.

“BWF is awaiting official reports from Badminton Asia and the Local Organising Committee to assess whether the correct medical procedures were followed in providing assistance to Zhang when he fell on court,” the federation added.

Zhang Zhi Jie fainted during his match once morest Japanese badminton player Kazuma Kawamo in the Group D preliminary round at the Amongrogo Sports Hall, Yogyakarta, Sunday (30/6).

The results of the examination showed that Zhang Zhi Jie died due to sudden cardiac arrest.

BWF has been in the spotlight following receiving criticism regarding the standard of medical treatment.

“According to the guidelines, the tournament doctor under the direction of the referee has the responsibility to respond to on-court emergencies, including suspected cardiac arrest, and in this scenario, to provide intervention until appropriate medical services are available (e.g. an ambulance),” the BWF wrote.

“When implementing these guidelines, it is emphasized that all personnel must be prepared at all times to respond to all necessary medical interventions, including emergencies, as soon as possible,” the rule continues.

BWF said it would take necessary steps to thoroughly review the matter in consultation with Badminton Asia and the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).

“Once our review is complete, we will determine whether certain aspects of these guidelines need to be changed,” the BWF said.

“The existing review, which began earlier this year, evaluating BWF’s policies and procedures regarding emergency intervention by tournament doctors to ensure the most appropriate and timely care, will include findings from the BWF assessment and Badminton Asia report,” BWF concluded. (Ant/Z-1)
