According to ViewerAnon, a well-known video game industry insider, Santa Monica Studio – the team behind the series God of War – is reportedly working on a surprise for fans.

Released in November 2022, God of War Ragnarök is the direct continuation of God of War from 2018, a continuation of the series of the same name first launched in 2005. The recent adaptations tell the story of Spartan warrior Kratos and his son Atreus who must navigate a world filled with creatures, monsters and gods from Norse mythology.
According to the latest rumor, the studio behind the saga is in the process of releasing a sequel to the last opus in the series. However, it is not yet clear whether this will simply be downloadable content (DLC) for the 2022 PS5 and PS4 game, or a “semi-sequel”, i.e. something closer to a standalone expansion than a true sequel. In other words, something in the style of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales rather than Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
PlayStation is increasingly exploring the idea of what many call “semi-sequels” or standalone expansions. Recent examples include Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Infamous First Light et Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. These titles are referred to as “semi-sequels” because they go well beyond simple DLC or a classic expansion, but are generally quite similar to the original product, with less content, a reduced production cost and a more affordable purchase price.
For now, it’s prudent to take this information with a grain of salt. Even if this leak is accurate as of now, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way, as everything is subject to change in the gaming industry. So far, neither PlayStation nor Santa Monica Studios nor anyone involved in the project have commented on this rumor.
Given PlayStation’s history with “semi-sequels”, the current market environment and game development costs, as well as the reputation of the tipster, it is likely that this information is true. THowever, if this is the case, it would appear that a smaller team of new developers would be responsible for development, rather than the entire studio.
