An extraordinary photo reveals Mars in all its glory.
The European Space Agency offers us a very nice gift to celebrate 20 years of Mars Express : a mosaic of the red planet, composed of 90 photos, reveals its composition as well as its superb colors.

In orbit around Mars, the probe distanced itself and used its high resolution camera (HRSC) to produce the extraordinary image which you can observe below:
« To create this mosaic, the team referenced the color of each constituent image using a color model derived from high-altitude imagery, which allowed them to preserve color variations and reveal a much richer color view of Mars than has been seen before “, explains the ESA.
As you can see, the view in the photo is centered on the impressive Valles Marineris canyon which is 4,000 km long and has a depth of around 7,000 meters.
The color variations are linked to the different minerals, clayey or sulfated, which are present on the surface. These minerals are also evidence that liquid water flowed on Mars for an extended period of its history. It is for this reason that scientific missions are multiplying and that researchers hope to one day find traces of life.
