Christopher Graves used a custom circuit, the original camera sensor, a memory controller and a number of capacitors to complete his project. He also used an iPhone XR lens, fixed everything in a custom frame to minimize protrusions. And although the lens no longer has the same position to allow new types of shooting, this does not impact the quality at all. In other words, you’ll have the same grainy black and white output that makes the Game Boy Camera so popular, even 25 years after its release.

The camera fits into the space for the cartridge and can even run ROMs, if that’s your thing. You can even expand the flash memory too, so your photos persist forever (or until the disk dies, at least). Christopher Graves has already planned to further improve the overall design, including considering replacing the iPhone XR lens with that of an iPhone 14.

The main interest of this project remains miniaturization. When attached to a Game Boy Pocket, for example, the whole thing fits in a pocket, which is very, very nice, for those who have already carried around the original.
