If the race for the most innovative foldable smartphone in Flip format is raging between Samsung and Oppo, it’s Motorola’s turn to play its trump card. For its next Razr 2023, the American brand plans to offer an even larger external screen than its two competitors.
The clamshell foldable smartphone market has never evolved so fast. If we were already witnessing the rivalry of the South Korean manufacturer Samsung with the Chinese Oppo in this category, it is Motorola’s turn to jostle for a place.
In a tweet posted on February 22, relayed by GSMArena, the famous leaker Evan Bass has revealed what the next Motorola Razr, expected for 2023, should look like. Three images of 3D renderings of a smartphone very similar to the Razr 2022, released last August… except that the external screen is now extends over the entire half of the product. According to the visuals, it would even support navigation buttons.
Ever larger external screens
These first images of Motorola’s next smartphone come once morest a backdrop of innovation in the clamshell foldable market, or “flip phones“. While Samsung’s first models in this format launched three years ago were initially content to offer a smartphone over 6 inches that might be folded in half, Motorola has always offered an external screen since its Razr 2019. This allows access certain options without having to unfold the phone.
Samsung followed the trend, offering a 1.9-inch external panel on its latest Galaxy Z Flip 4, compared to 2.7 inches on the latest Razr 2022. But just recently, the Oppo Find N2 Flip – the first of its kind for the brand — outbid, with a 3.26-inch screen.
Samsung and Motorola, same fight
Since then, rumors have multiplied regarding Samsung and Motorola’s response to the Oppo Find N2 Flip. Two days ago, the leaker Ice Universe confirmed information from analyst Ross Young, specialist on screen production lines: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 might have a larger screen than Oppo’s.
He even shares this Wednesday, February 22, an example image on Twitter… almost identical to the 3D renderings of the next Motorola Razr 2023 by Evan Bass. An assembly which remains however very summary and hypothetical.

But if these two rumors are confirmed, these two future “flip phonesmight compensate for a blind spot of this smartphone format: the frustration for some users of always having to open their phone before being able to use it, even for certain basic tasks.
With a larger external screen (and, we hope, an interface that intelligently takes advantage of it), these two products might therefore be attractive to a segment of consumers.
