A church in Chicago helps undocumented immigrants with housing, resources, legal services and access to employment opportunities.
The initiative is part of a network of churches and organizations that help immigrant families obtain work permits so they can find well-paying jobs.
Among the beneficiaries is the case of Usvely Rejel, a 34-year-old Venezuelan who received her work permit in December and began working at the Gracia y Paz Church café.
“I feel super happy because first I can work. I already have my social security. I can have my bank account. I can start getting my credit to have my own house,” said Rejel.

How to get a work permit
To apply for a U.S. work permit card (EAD), you must submit an Application for Employment Authorization (Form 1-765), follow the instructions, and pay the processing fee.
Depending on the immigration category you qualify for, your EAD work permit will be valid for 1 or 2 years.
If U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves your application, your EAD card may be mailed to you or you may need to obtain it in person at their offices.
