A bottle of The Macallan Adami 1926, considered the most valuable whiskey in the world, is being auctioned this Saturday at Sotheby’s. It is estimated at between 750,000 and 1.2 million pounds, which might break the current price record for a bottle of alcohol.
A bottle of alcohol costing over a million euros. This is the symbolic price that a bottle of The Macallan Adami 1926, nicknamed “the Holy Grail of whisky”, should exceed during an auction organized this Saturday by the Anglo-Saxon house Sotheby’s.
“This bottle is estimated between 750,000 and 1.2 million pounds. If it reaches the maximum estimate of 1.2 million [environ 1,3 million d’euros]it will be a new record for a bottle of wine and spirits”, explains Jonny Fowle, director of whiskeys at Sotheby’s, who describes this whiskey as “the most precious in the world”.
“It’s the most expensive whiskey in the world for a long time.”
There are four different versions of this whiskey and each of them has broken its own sales record. “The current record is for the fine and rare labeled version of this – it’s the same liquid, but with a different label, explains Jonny Fowle. This is the first time Sotheby’s has sold one since 2019, when we We set this record.”
From folklore, word of mouth or mythology
The specialist points out that this is a very difficult bottle to access. “You might only buy it in a certain way, either directly from MacAllan if you were one of their best customers, or by buying it at an auction,” he says. But It’s one of those bottles that, through some sort of folklore, word of mouth or mythology, becomes the most valuable bottle that everyone is looking for.”
Having been able to taste “a very small drop”, he evokes a significant quantity of dried fruits, spices but also wood: “It spent 60 years in dark European oak wood, as its color shows.”
“It’s not a whiskey to take lightly. It’s a very rich whisky, but it’s incredible.”
Does this type of particularly expensive acquisition remain a trophy or does the buyer tend to give in to temptation? According to Jonny Fowle, the fate of the bottle depends on the buyer: “A lot of people want to keep this type of bottle as the focal point of their collection, their trophy purchase that they finally managed to collect. Others will drink it . It really depends. But I wouldn’t underestimate how many high-value bottles in the whiskey industry are drunk.”
