Four years following its founding, the Montreal studio Lowbirth Games finally arrives with This Bed We Made, a very first video game proposition. The result: a love letter to the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie, but with roots firmly planted in La Belle Province.

Montreal, 1958. Very strange things are happening at the Clarington Hotel. Some even go so far as to claim that the Montreal establishment is haunted. What is it really? The mystery hovers, extending from floor to floor.

It is by slipping into the shoes of Sophie Roy – a particularly nosy maid – that the player will have to carry out his investigation, linking one by one the clues left here and there by the customers, all probably splashed by a murder committed on places.

Shadow workers

The idea behind This Bed We Made began to germinate a long time ago in the minds of Chloé Lussier and her co-founders of Lowbirth Games, namely her sister Raphaëlle Lussier and their cousin, Olivier Lussier. Having herself worked in a hotel establishment during her studies, she sought to exploit the reality of these shadow workers, fertile ground for an investigation of this kind.

“When you stay in a hotel, you tend to forget regarding the maids. So people often leave behind intimate items, which can reveal things that even those closest to them don’t know regarding them. It’s therefore interesting to be in Sophie’s shoes, because she conducts her investigation herself by having this privileged access to their privacy, but without the authority or the obligations that the police have,” says Chloé Lussier. in interview at Journal.

Choice and consequences

Indeed, because the player can carry out the investigation as he sees fit… and sometimes by looking away. It is in fact possible to manipulate certain evidence, to make it disappear, or even to move it, in order to guide the suspicions of the authorities towards one suspect or another. And each of these choices will have an impact on the adventure and its outcome, “dozens” of conclusions having been developed for This Bed We Made.

Even how the player carries out Sophie’s daily tasks will have significant ramifications on the heroine’s fate and credibility.

“The primary goal was to make the experience more immersive by having the player perform different actions, whether it was making the bed or even mopping the floor in the hotel lobby. But ultimately, we said to ourselves that it would also influence Sophie’s reputation and her relationship with her colleagues, whether she was meticulous or not in carrying out her tasks. Everything is taken into account,” underlines Chloé Lussier.

The Quebec accent

For this very first international calling card, the Lowbirth Games studio was also keen to set its plot right here, in the heart of the metropolis, to offer players from here and elsewhere a showcase of our culture and our daily. And in order to push this concept even further, he called on a group of Quebec actors to lend their voices to the characters, both in the French and English versions.

We can therefore hear Robert Naylor, Patrick-Emmanuel Abellard, Victoria Diamond and other Alex Bisping in their languages, all having retained their natural accent.

“It was important for us, as a Quebec studio, that players recognize us in our work. Location, accent, and expressions aren’t something that has a big impact on the plot, so it’s still accessible for people playing elsewhere in the world. But it’s our signature, our way of showing our pride. We wanted to do it,” explains Chloé Lussier.

The game This Bed We Made will be available on PS5 and PC from 1is november. It will also launch on PS4 and Xbox Series X/S on December 13.
