Gotion has achieved a major breakthrough with its new battery, which allows electric cars to travel 1,000 km on a single charge. This announcement might well be the long-awaited catalyst for the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
Range is one of the main limitations of electric cars. But in the very near future, technological progress will allow an exceptional range of 1,000 km at a lower cost. However, this advancement is not the work of Elon Musk, but rather of an innovative partnership between Gotion High-Tech and the Volkswagen group.
An exceptional range of 1,000 km on a single charge
In 2024, a major breakthrough in the automotive field promises to revolutionize electric cars. Indeed, it will solve one of their biggest challenges: thelimited autonomy.
The battery, called “Astroinno”, uses an innovative chemical composition called lithium-fer-manganèse-phosphate (LMFP).
Adding manganese to the battery chemistry achieved higher energy density while reducing weight and package size. This technological advance is not limited to increasing autonomy. Indeed, it also offers a lighter and more compact solutionthus meeting the growing demand for efficient and practical electric vehicles.
In addition, the LMFP technology used in this battery offers exceptional energy density of 240 Wh/kg. This density is significantly higher than that of current lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, which reach around 190 Wh/kg.
Battery for electric cars: dExceptional performance at an affordable cost
What sets the LMFP battery apart from other technologies is its competitive cost. According to Cheng Qian, President of Gotion, the Astroinno LMFP is expected to cost 5% less than a conventional LFP cell. This economy might represent a real turning point in making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.
Gotion has also successfully positioned the LMFP battery as a more affordable option than nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry (NMC) batteries. These are used in today’s electric vehicles. According to Mr. Cheng, LMFP batteries might cost between 20 and 25% less than their NMC counterparts, thus providing a significant economic advantage.
Another innovative aspect of Astroinno’s LMFP battery concerns its charging speed. Users will be able to charge their electric car from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, thanks to progressive charging. This fast and efficient feature addresses consumer concerns regarding electric vehicle charging times. Additionally, it helps accelerate the acceptance of this technology.
Although Gotion’s announcement is met with widespread enthusiasm, mass production of the Astroinno LMFP battery is only planned for the second quarter of 2024.
