Combined with artificial intelligence, robots might revolutionize many sectors by taking care of the most menial tasks, allowing humans to focus on the rest. This is what the company Built Robotics offers. Its RPD 35 is an excavator, or backhoe, driven by artificial intelligence and designed to assist in the construction of solar farms.

The robot does not take care of all the operations alone. His specialty is pile driving. The piles in question are huge metal beams of 3.5 to 5 meters, weighing up to 90 kilograms and which must be driven into the ground vertically in order to create the foundations of the structure that will support the solar panels.

Three to five times faster than a human team

The RPD 35 is equipped with a special head capable of gripping beams on its carriage and then driving them straight into the ground. Its GPS system ensures an accuracy of less than one centimeter. He is able to repeat the operation every 73 seconds, and thus manages to place up to 300 per day. The robot is three to five times faster than a human team.

The robot incorporates eight safety systems to avoid accidents, including physical and wireless stop systems, geofencing, a physical safety barrier, pedestrian detection, and a system called “Guardian”. The manufacturer announces zero security incidents out of a total of 18,000 hours of autonomous operation. The first machines should be marketed in the fourth quarter of 2023.
