This capability previously reserved for specific smartphones like the iPhone 14, or a few rare Android smartphones, is now accessible to a greater number of devices thanks to Motorola. Motorola has launched an innovative gadget, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, which promises to extend this capability to all compatible smartphones.
A practical accessory
Initially announced in February, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link will be available in Europe from mid-July at a price of 179 euros. This compact device, certified IP68 for its water resistance, can connect via Bluetooth to any Android smartphone equipped with Android 10 or higher, as well as to all iPhones running iOS 14 or higher. It uses a MediaTek MT6825 NB-IoT chip.

The connection is made through to the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app. Users can send messages and pass emergency calls via Satellite Linkwhich transmits them to the satellites thanks to 3GPP NTN standard. If the recipient does not have the application, they receive an SMS instead. However, to respond, he will need to download the Bullitt app.
Superior technology?
A notable aspect of this device is its MediaTek MT6825 NB-IoT chipset which allows a 140-character message to be transmitted in half a second without having to first point the device at a satellite. That’s a huge advantage over the iPhone 14’s satellite connectivity, which requires alignment first. With its 600 mAh battery, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link can work for four days without recharging. An integrated SOS button allows you to make an emergency call without a smartphone.
Cost and subscriptions
Besides the initial cost of the device, using this technology requires a subscription. The most basic, the subscription SOS Assist, can be used for free for the first year, then costs 2.99 euros per month. If you also want to send and receive messages to your friends, several plans are available.
The plan Essential includes 30 messages for 4.99 euros per month, while the plan Everyday with 80 messages costs 9.99 euros per month. The plan Premium, with a quota of 300 messages, costs 29.99 euros per month. Finally, the plan Freedom offers a quota of 250 messages for 59.99 euros per year.
