There have been some fascinatingly weird-looking, ultra-premium, super-old-fashioned bottles of Scotch whiskey released in recent years, the kind that almost work better as art than decanters. The latest abstract glassware has arrived with a new 45-year-old single malt from Old Pulteney which looks like a Faberge egg with a windswept scarf perched on an asteroid, and is only available at auction.

Bow Wave de Old Pulteney

The whiskey in question Old Pulteney is called Bow Wave, the oldest single malt whiskey to come from this Highland distillery on the northeast coast of Scotland. It was matured for more than 40 years in American oak barrels and then placed in a first-fill Spanish oak barrel for a further five years.

He experto en whisky Dave Broom He was one of the lucky few to sample this expression and had this to say regarding the palate: “Refined, clearly ripe, but still fresh. There are hints of dried pineapple, a light wax polish, then scented sandalwood and myrrh with a touch of austerity behind it. Over time, there are notes of oxidized walnut, then leather oils that drift into the varnish. Complex and fascinating.”

There is only one Bow Wave bottle available and it was designed by Brodie Nairn y Nichola Burns de Glasstorm.

The bottle itself is made of hand-blown glass with cutouts meant to mimic waves crashing around a ship in stormy seas. The top is a deep blue, while the bottom has a faint silver band around it that was designed by local Scottish silversmith Lucy Woodley.

The cork is hidden and can only be accessed by a specially designed key.
