This 38-year-old takes over for Gerhard Struber at Salzburg

Officially confirmed: Bundesliga soccer team Red Bull Salzburg is parting ways with coach Gerhard Struber. His successor will be Onur Cinel until the end of the season.

The German-Turkish is the current Liefering coach. The 38-year-old was at Schalke for a long time in various positions, including as assistant coach. Has been a member of the ÖFB team’s coaching team since June 1, 2022. On July 1, 2023, Schalke moved to FC Liefering.

“After the request from FC Red Bull Salzburg, it was immediately clear to me that I wanted to support the team, so I am very grateful for the trust they have placed in me. We have to form a strong unit within a very short time and need the highest possible level in every training session and in every game so that we can achieve the club’s desired goal,” Cinel was quoted as saying in a press release.

The performance in the 1:3 win once morest LASK was the last straw for Struber in a disappointing season. Struber only stepped in at short notice at the start of the season following his predecessor Matthias Jaissle left for the Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli. Struber is only the third Salzburg coach in the Red Bull era to have to resign during the season. In front of him there is only Huub Stevens (2011) and Peter Zeidler

“After the development of the last games and a thorough analysis of the sporting situation, we came to the conclusion that we should give the team a new impetus for the championship finish,” says sports director Bernhard Seonbuchner, explaining the change.

Seonbuchner makes it clear that Cinel is only working for Salzburg for the championship finish and will then return to Liefering. Daniel Beichler, who led the U18 team to 17 wins in 17 games this season, will take over at Liefering on an interim basis.
