Thiruvananthapuram – Anilkumar alias Katachil Ani in Kamleswaram Balavan Nagar, the first accused in the case of killing Ayyappanashari (52), a native of Attukal Manakkad Medamuk, has been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 16,22,500. Thiruvananthapuram 7th Additional Sessions Judge Prasoon Mohan pronounced the sentence. In addition to life imprisonment, he faces an additional 30 years in prison for charges of unlawful assembly, rioting with a deadly weapon, housebreaking, destruction of household goods and attempted murder. If the fine is not paid, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment of three years.
Co-accused 2 to 9 in the case have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 30 years each and a fine of Rs. If the fine is not paid, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment of two years. The court also ordered that the fine should be paid to the dependents of the deceased Ayyappanashari. The court also ordered that compensation be paid to the dependents of the slain Ayyappan Ashari and his brother Rajagopal Ashari through the Legal Services Authority. For the prosecution, Special Public Prosecutor M. Salahuddin, Adv. Akhila Lal and Adv. Devika Madhu appeared.
The other accused in the case are Sunil Kumar, Anil Kumar, Manoj, Unni, Satish Kumar, Pradish, Santosh and Biddy Santosh.
Anilkumar (45), Sunilkumar (41) alias Suni, Suni’s brother Anilkumar (45), Manoj (38), Unni (41), Satish Kumar (43) alias Govardhan, Santosh (41) alias Pradish , Santosh (42) and Santosh (38) alias Beedi Santosh are accused 1 to 9. The trial started following 19 years in the case where there were 19 accused. Sanoj, Prakash and Suresh, the co-accused in the case, died before the trial began. 16 accused were tried. The court acquitted seven accused yesterday. On August 28, 2004, Ayyappanashari was killed near Attukal Medamuk Mutharamman temple on Thiruvona day. A dispute over the taking of flowers from a flower shop for that flower bed in connection with the Onam celebration resulted in the murder.
