The second pair of O3b mPOWER satellites will join the first two satellites launched in December 2022, which reached the target medium Earth orbit (MEO) and are currently undergoing in-orbit verification. The O3b mPOWER system will deliver high-performance network services, providing industry-leading throughput, predictable low latency and ultra-reliable service availability.

Comprised of an initial constellation of 11 high-performance satellites built by Boeing, the O3b mPOWER ecosystem is easily scalable and requires only six MEO satellites to provide high-performance connectivity services around the world. SES has also been working closely with some of the world’s best terrestrial systems partners to virtualize and standardize a variety of platforms on the O3b mPOWER network to serve mobility, telecom, government and enterprise customers more efficiently and effectively.

“Today, we are one step closer to fulfilling our promise of a new era of connectivity. Our team has been working with more than 30 technology partners to prepare the O3b mPOWER space and ground infrastructure to deliver the differentiated, high-performance services that customers demand to run their operations,” comments Steve Collar, CEO of SES. “We have already implemented and tested the O3b mPOWER terminals in the existing O3b constellation and we are delighted to hear positive feedback from customers regarding increased reliability and better performance, as well as ease of self-installation, activation and maintenance.”

“It’s been an incredible journey with an exceptional team at the Boeing Satellite Factory and an invaluable partnership with SES,” shares Michelle Parker, vice president, Space Mission Systems, Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “As we finalize the remaining satellites, we are excited to show, in orbit, how our fully flexible 702X payload architecture allows operators to adapt to changing business needs and reallocate resources instantly.”

Customers using SES’ second-generation MEO system are ready to transform their operations and benefit from terabit-level scale; the highest, most flexible and guaranteed income; round-trip latency of less than 150 milliseconds and unparalleled service availability.

The commercial O3b mPOWER service is expected to start in the third quarter of 2023. Major customers who have signed up for the next-generation system include Microsoft, Princess Cruises, Marlink, Jio Platforms, Orange, Claro Brasil, Vodafone Cook Islands, Government of Luxembourg (subject to parliamentary approval) and the newly announced CNT Ecuador.
