Twelve… This is the number of games included in the main saga of Assassin’s Creed. If the turn that the latter has taken since Assassin’s Creed Origins left some on the floor, it’s hard to deny that this is one of the most iconic licenses of recent years. But despite its strong position, Ubisoft is currently being rather discreet regarding it. Admittedly, there is Assassin’s Creed Infinity (which won’t see the light of day anytime soon) and a few rumors, but nothing tangible and concrete to get your teeth into for the end of the year. One might almost believe in an end of race for the license, which one very often hears being criticized from all sides. And yet, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was a real success, breaking the record for the number of launch sales for an Assassin’s Creed game and allowing Ubisoft to post a significant profit for the 2020 fiscal year. Almost fifteen years following the launch of the first game, Assassin’s Creed is therefore still on the rise, well following the release of the most emblematic opuses.
Assassin’s Creed, almost 15 years of assassination
If we all have a little favorite in the Assassin’s Creed class, Assassin’s Creed II is undoubtedly the most popular. Deepening the formula of the first game, the title has managed to impose the license as a must. Between its infiltration side, the assassinations, the representation of different historical periods, its scenario centered on a hidden world conflict and its emblematic assassins, Assassin’s Creed then forges its own DNA and blows a little breath of fresh air on the industry. On many points, this second opus therefore stands as the apogee of a license that will suffer from comparison for a long time following that, despite the improvements. Subsequent episodes struggled, for the most part, to develop the same aura. Some, like Assassin’s Creed Unity or Assassin’s Creed Syndicateare not remembered for good reasons. Faced with these few setbacks and a constantly evolving video game market, Ubisoft recently decided to profoundly change the Assassin’s Creed formula.
In 2017, Assassin’s Creed Origins arrives and puts a big kick in the historic formula of the Ubisoft license. Less infiltration, an Assassin/Templar conflict that has become almost secondary, the disappearance of the Order of Assassins as we know it… The changes are numerous and some fans of the license do not find their account. But others adhere all the same to this new formula which seems to propel the license to the top of the sales. Because if Origins has eclipsed these different points, it is to emphasize others. From this opus, we therefore find ourselves with gigantic open worlds, a greater emphasis on the historical side, a hundred hours of content or even further exploration. If many of them regret the past DNA of the license, they are at least as much to appreciate this new formula and to have adopted it. It’s hard to say what the license has in store for us in the future, but Ubisoft has a real goose with golden eggs in its hands and to drop it would be a shame. While waiting to find out more, we invite you to take a quick look at the series through a quiz. The goal ? Test your knowledge of the license. True Mentor or simple novice?
