Things get really loud in Bergheim

The Kletzenbrot drivers in Bergheim are on the road on December 28th, the “Day of the Innocent Children”.

On the evening of December 28th, the unmarried village boys in Bergheim go through the town driving for bread and stop at farms and houses to wish the residents a happy new year. They make as much noise as possible with ratchets, goats and canisters (see archive photo from 2008) to drive away the evil spirits. They ask for a small donation with the words “An oat for the mold”. In the past there was probably Kletzenbrot instead of money, hence the name. The custom is apparently only common in Bergheim. The community newspaper provided information regarding the home visits and that part of the donations would be used for charitable purposes. If you don’t want a visit from the Kletzenbrot drivers, you should put a note at the entrance.

The “Day of the Innocent Children” has been celebrated in the Catholic Church on December 28th since the sixth century. He reminds us that, according to the Bible, King Herod had all newborns killed out of fear of the Messiah. Only John, the future Baptist, whom his mother Elizabeth hid in the mountains, and Jesus, who fled to Egypt with Mary and Joseph, survived.
