“Thiem Takes Important Step in Return to Form, Falls Just Short Against Tsitsipas at Madrid Masters”

2023-04-29 21:00:38

On his way back to old strength, Thiem took another important step on Saturday, although he ultimately mightn’t reward himself with moving into the next round.

This was partly due to the strong service game of his Greek counterpart. Tsitsipas fielded 79 percent of his first serves, with 88 percent of them even winning a point. In between, Tsitsipas even played 39 (!) successful first serves in a row.

Thiem got off to a lightning start in the first set, taking his opponent’s second service game. The 2020 US Open winner then fended off three break chances and thus prevented the rebreak.

In the second half of the game, on the other hand, Thiem lost control and conceded the set equalization with a 1: 6. The decision finally came in the third set when Tsitsipas rewarded himself for his efforts with his second match point. In the next round he now meets the Argentinian Sebastian Baez.

Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime out early

In addition to Thiem, the Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime also had to say goodbye to Madrid early on.

Auger-Aliassime lost to the Serb Dusan Lajovic 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 7 (5: 7), while his compatriot lost to the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen 7: 6 (7: 4), 4: 6, 6: 7 ( 1:7).

Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, lived up to his role as favorite and, thanks to a two-set win over Italy’s Andrea Vavassori, easily advanced to the next round (6:4, 6:3).
