Thiem leaves Rome with a loss in the first round of Fognini

Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini beat Austrian Dominic Thiem with two clean sets in the first round of the 1,000-point Rome Masters Tournament, to leave the latter out of another major tournament, as happened last week in the Madrid Open.
Fognini, ranked 56th in the world, finished the first set, beating Thiem 6-4.

In the second set, the two competitors exchanged balls, but the Austrian made more mistakes than the Italian, and the latter won 7-5.

Fognini will meet in the second round with the winner of the match between Spain’s Pedro Martinez and Italy’s Janek Sener.
