Thiago Silva’s Interview Reveals Lack of Clear Plan in PSG’s European Pursuits

In an interview for the Guardian, Thiago Silva discussed the various European disappointments experienced with PSG. For the Brazilian defender, the absence of a “clear plan” from management was particularly detrimental.

Free party from PSG in the summer of 2020, Thiago Silva was one of the incarnations of the Parisian club for eight seasons. Winner of the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, the Brazilian defender returned to the Guardianon this quest for the European trophy for his former club.

“Nothing happens overnight. You’re not going to achieve everything just because you have a lot of money,” commented Thiago Silva. “That’s not how football works. If you don’t have a clear plan of what you want, things won’t work.”

“We have done nothing to be respected at home”

If he won Ligue 1 seven times with his teammates, Thiago Silva experienced several European failures with PSG. For his last match at the club, the ex-captain experienced a defeat against Bayern Munich, in August 2020, in the Champions League final.

“Above all, you have to be respected inside your country to be respected outside. That’s not what we did. We did the opposite,” judged the 39-year-old. “We wanted to be loved abroad, but we did nothing to be respected at home.”

Under contract until 2024 with Chelsea, Thiago Silva remains a basic man under the orders of Mauricio Pochettino, the former PSG coach whom he nevertheless did not know in Paris. Since his departure, the former AC Milan has already criticized the Parisian project, which according to him lacks stability as he noted in April 2022. In recent weeks, the Brazilian liked a message on social networks which criticized the major cleaning carried out last summer, notably with the departures of Neymar and Marco Verratti.
