They will separate prosecuted people deprived of liberty from those who are convicted

Asunción, IP Agency.- For the first time in the history of Paraguay, prosecuted persons deprived of liberty (PPL) will be separated from those who are convicted, the Minister of Justice, Ángel Barchini, informed the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, during the meeting of the Council of Ministers in the Government Palace.

This work will begin at the Minga Guazú Regional Penitentiary, which will be enabled during May. He highlighted the work they are doing with the Supreme Court of Justice, the State Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of Public Defense to accelerate judicial processes, taking into account that only 31% of the PPL have a judicial conviction.

In his report he also highlighted the coordinated work with the ministries of the Interior and Defense on issues of security and control of the penitentiary system, as well as the training of new penitentiary agents. “There has been a change, but that does not mean that we are satisfied or happy; “We continue in a frontal fight that does not pause” once morest organized crime, he said.

Prison reform

Within the framework of the penitentiary reform, the bills for the new penitentiary agent are being studied in the National Congress, which will combat internal corruption in the Ministry of Justice in terms of complicity and blackmail exercised by union members and penitentiary agents; as well as the law that enables maximum security pavilions. “We are respectful of human rights, but there are situations that require different treatments,” he explained.

As part of the change in the country’s penitentiary centers, telematic hearing rooms are being enabled, which speed up procedures, promote security and save costs in terms of transfers.

Transfer from the women’s penitentiary

Regarding the transfer of the “Casa del Buen Pastor” women’s penitentiary, a mandate received from President Peña upon assuming office, Barchini reported that there are three proposals that will be submitted to the Presidency for consideration.

He also mentioned that the plan to install registry offices of the General Directorate of the Civil Status Registry in public hospitals is in full execution. To date, 21 hospital centers already have these offices, to facilitate the registration of newborns and carry out other vital procedures.

Likewise, there are such offices in the Consulate General of Buenos Aires, La Matanza, La Plata and border cities.
