SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Federation of Sports Medicine announced the holding of the first International Congress of Sports Medicine (Fedomede), in which international figures and figures from the country of medical science in this sector will be exhibitors.

The meeting will take place on October 22 and 23 of next month and is held at the Hotel Barceló Santo Domingo.

The idea is to “encourage or promote sports medicine and science and also the prevention of doping,” said the president of Fedomede, Milton Pinedo. The Congress is organized by the doctors of the Federation, Víctor Figueroa (general secretary) and Lisette Sánchez Francis (treasurer).

Doctors Walter Frontera (specialist in physical medicine/Puerto Rico); Manuela González Santander (specialist in sports medicine/Spain); Juan Ramón Heredia (doctor of sciences/Spain) and Silvia Ortega Cebrián (doctor of health sciences, sports physiotherapist/Spain) are the international guests, reported Pineda.

Doctors José Joaquín Puello Herrera (neurosurgeon doctor) will be present from the Dominican Republic; Laura Anabel Pinedo (rehabilitation doctor, HGPS staff doctor); Félix Rodríguez (orthopedist-traumatologist doctor); Edwin Rodríguez (orthopedist-traumatologist); César Andrés Báez (Specialist in internal medicine); Heida Joaquín Tineo (specialist in sports medicine); Elías Pérez González (expert in training medical control); Abel Caballero Ledesma (graduate in physiotherapy) and Damarys Vicente (clinical psychologist specializing in sports psychology).

The congress includes keynote speeches, conferences, presentations of clinical cases and workshops.

Among the main topics are sports injuries, doping in sports, functional sports evaluation, psychology applied to sports, sports physiotherapy and exercise for health. “These are very current issues in our country today, because in the last two years we have had a great performance of our athletes in different types of competitions,” said Pinedo.

He added: “I think if that high performance has a greater foundation or foundation in sports medicine and sports science, then high performance can progress even further.”

The national sport has achieved notable successes on the international stage, which is why this type of activity is necessary. “The Dominican Republic demands it due to the (sports) growth that the country has been having,” said Pinedo, making it necessary “to continue accompanying the Dominican athlete in search of a safe high performance.”
