Monterrey.- Due to the growing demand for natural gas from the industrial and electrical sector in northwestern Mexico, the American company El Paso Natural Gas Company (EPNG), a subsidiary of the Kinder Morgan company, will develop the Yuma II project in the United States, with extension to the national territory, in coordination with Grupo CLISA, from Monterrey.
In a statement, Kinder Morgan indicated that the expansion of Yuma II consists of the construction of a natural gas transportation pipeline of approximately 225 kilometers, with a diameter of 30 to 42 inches, in the counties of Maricopa and Yuma, in Arizona, in addition to of some compression installations and related installations.
The project will connect with EPNG’s existing South Mainline system near Phoenix, Arizona, to a point on the international border with Mexico near San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.
EPNG began the project’s open season, which consists of the process for natural gas consuming companies interested in joining the transportation project to submit their proposals through non-binding bid requests.
The Yuma II project and its extension to Baja California are expected to come into operation as of the last quarter of 2025.
The purpose is to connect natural gas supply sources from Texas and New Mexico to northwestern Sonora and Baja California to increase the supply of energy in the input market so that prices are more competitive and rates are increasingly lower for consumers. national users.
This type of project, Kinder Morgan pointed out, occurs within the framework of “nearshoring”, a strategy in which transnational companies will relocate their plants to countries closer to their origin to optimize their supply chains.
