The embarked watching of whales and other marine mammals will have its management plan. The initial kick was given through a waistr in which the scientific data obtained so far on the activity, which has been carried out for 12 years in the San Matías Gulf, were shared.
The idea is that the sighting becomes a consolidated tourist product, since shipments (which started in 2012) continue to take place in an experimental framework, and it has been proven that they are friendly both to cetaceans and to the environment. They also attract the public at times when the destination does not have the presence of mass tourism, since the ‘francas’ arrive between the end of July and the beginning of August, and stay until the end of October.
“We have a fluid relationship with the International Whaling Commission, because cetaceans are straddling species. Within this group, the sighting commission followed the project from the outset, because it was a unique opportunity to see, from the start, the activity carried out in the area. AND Now we are aiming to establish a management plan with rules that regulate the future of the activity”, stated the marine biologist Raúl González, in dialogue with Río Negro Radio.
González He is a professor at the Superior School of Marine Sciences of the National University of Comahue (Unco) and principal investigator of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (Conicet). He was one of the speakers at the workshop that was held yesterday.
“We have the support of the Federal Investment Council (CFI) which, in 2014, enabled a contribution for the collection of data for the activity. So we started with the task and this It will be the third stage of this initiative, which has been taking place successfully, because, in addition, the species is recovering and repopulating areas like this, where there are historical records of its presence” the biologist added.
“The log books of the old whaling ships that decimated the species recorded that There were 60,000 whales in San Antonio Bay, which at that time was known as Bottomless Bay, and today the number of specimens that visit us does not reach 6,000. We are recovering the right ones, but the process is slow,” the man graphed.
In the first meeting, González and the doctor in biological sciences Enrique Crespo, the marine biologist Magdalena Arias and the graduate in tourism Guadalupe Sarti spoke. It was from 2:00 p.m., in the convention hall of the Grutense casino, and was sponsored by the Río Negro Ministry of Tourism, the Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, the local municipality, and the Federal Investment Council.
Some data collected was recalled there, such as the prevalence “of solitary individuals or mating groups among whales arriving in the Gulf. Although there are more and more mothers with calves”.
Now what remains, according to the professional consulted, is “continue working actively for the preparation of the management plan among all the actors of the sector”.
