Asuncion, IP.- Health authorities are urging citizens to intensify the elimination of mosquito breeding sites to prevent possible dengue and chikungunya epidemics.
Less than 1 percent is the infestation rate that does not constitute a risk for epidemic outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya, however, the metropolitan area currently has an average of 10 percent, according to the most recent results of samples taken in this area of the country.
Silvio Ortega, director of the Malaria Eradication Service (Senepa), expressed his concern about the high percentage of larval infestation seen in various neighborhoods, mainly in the Capital and Central areas.
He indicated that, although the country does not currently have outbreaks or epidemics, surveillance continues, emphasizing environmental control in the most affected areas. Ortega said that environmental control actions are being strengthened in the most affected areas, such as Fernando de la Mora, San Lorenzo, Capiatá, Luque, Mariano Roque Alonso and Ñemby, cities that have infestations above 10 percent.
Within this constant surveillance, localities that are at high risk were included, such as Pedro Juan Caballero, Alto Paraná, Caaguazú and Canindeyú, which register massive circulation of people, mainly foreigners.
The Ministry of Health is asking citizens to continue to eliminate breeding sites in their homes on a daily basis to prevent a dengue or chikungunya epidemic.
