A couple drowned following being dragged down a canal bed when they apparently tried to rescue a dog that had fallen into the water, in an event that occurred in the Mendoza town of Maipú.
The case occurred this Thursday, October 5 at 5:30 p.m. According to sources, a call to the 911 emergency line gave notice that some people had fallen into the water channel in the vicinity of the Chachingo de Maipú park.
Upon arrival, police personnel managed to remove the victims, identified as Gastón Navarro and Micaela Díaz, both 27 years old, who were unconscious, so they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers with negative results.
Meanwhile, doctors from the Coordinated Emergency Service (SEC) who went to the scene confirmed the death of the couple.
According to reports from neighbors, the man had jumped in to rescue a family dog, followed by his partner, being dragged along the riverbed until they were submerged and suffered suffocation due to immersion, police spokespersons said.
According to the newspaper Los Andes, Gastón and Camila were dating and risked their lives to save the family dog, which had fallen following a bee sting. The dog also died in the accident.
