Defense Minister Jorge Chávez Cresta arrived this Friday at the Peru-Chile border, in Tacna, to supervise the entry of a contingent of regarding 300 Army troops to provide support to the Police.
“This group of the Armed Forces will support immigration control before the registration of dozens of undocumented foreigners.” The presence of the troops does not have the objective of militarizing the border, nor the city of Tacna.
Chávez Cresta explained that the members of the Army will be located “in the second line”, in support of the police officers who will remain in the vanguard.
“On the front line will be the 390 police officers from the special units of Lima, as well as from Arequipa and Tacna, taking turns in the most complicated points. And in the second line, the Armed Forces will be located, reinforcing the police and giving guarantees in the unrestricted control of all the people who enter Peru: with their immigration card, visa and passport, ”he explained.
A series of crimes will be faced in border areas
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that the measures taken to strengthen control at the borders of Peru are framed within existing international agreements and international humanitarian law.
“These provisions also have the objective of effectively confronting a series of crimes in these border areas,” said Peter Camino Cannock, head of the General Directorate for the Americas of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry.
He stressed that these are temporary measures and that these “are respectful of existing bilateral agreements with neighboring countries.”
Bilateral work team of the foreign ministries of Peru and Chile
A work team has been created made up of officials from the political, border and consular areas of the foreign ministries of Peru and Chile, so that, from a comprehensive and humanitarian perspective, they can address aspects related to this migratory crisis on our southern border, referred.
As is known, the blockades that migrants stranded on the southern border are carrying out on the Pan-American Highway, occur in Chilean territory and therefore must be resolved quickly by the competent authorities.
“It is only the responsibility of the police of that country to take all the necessary measures to avoid these actions that generate disorder and that affect the free movement of people and goods between the two cities,” said Camino Cannock, referring to the representative of the Peruvian Foreign Ministry. It has asked that the neighboring country show firmness in this regard, he added.
At the border there is now a greater presence of members of the National Police. This is because on Thursday night, a contingent of 50 agents arrived, which will join the 190 troops that were already in the area.
