Authorities from the Municipality of Guatemala, the Government and the US Embassy supervised this Thursday, April 11, the progress of the construction project of the first phase of the Guatemala City metro, during a tour in which delivery of a pre-feasibility study for the construction of overpasses, official sources reported.
The supervision was carried out at the Calzada Atanasio Tzul and 13th Street overpass, an infrastructure that, according to the capital’s mayor, Ricardo Quiñónez, is strategic to “launch the Metro in the city.”
Quiñónez pointed out that this is the route that will constitute the white line of the metro, which will connect the south and north of the capital. He added that this phase is “already underway.” The blue line will run from east to west.
“With these two lines we are starting this historic day of work for mobility, for the quality of life and the transformation of Guatemala City and the metropolitan area,” added the mayor.
Quiñónez added that over the course of the month more details will be given regarding what the lines that extend to the municipalities surrounding the city represent, so that it is an integrated project.
“We want to announce that within all this work, the US Embassy, through the Agency for Development, has had a strategic participation in being able to incorporate resources to support this collaborative work and make the white line of the City of Mexico subway a reality. Guatemala,” the mayor explained.

For his part, the US ambassador to Guatemala, Tobin Bradley, delivered the pre-feasibility studies for the construction of overpasses that will be necessary to launch the City’s metro project.
“This event not only marks a milestone in our collaboration, but a step forward in our commitment to a more prosperous future for Guatemala and the region,” Bradley said.
He added that the relationship between the US and Guatemala is based on the mutual understanding that economic development, security and social stability are essential pillars to ensure that citizens have the tools and possibilities to reach their maximum potential.
“This commitment entails significant investments in infrastructure, which are crucial to connecting markets, boosting local economies and strengthening our nations. The improvement of Guatemala’s road infrastructure is essential for the integration of domestic markets, considering that, according to Agexport, 67 percent of exports come from rural areas,” commented the ambassador.
“Strategic investments in infrastructure and economic growth and development will allow other regions of the country to develop,” added the diplomat.
He added that investment in roads, ports and airports has a high economic return that supports the future of the private sector and the well-being of Guatemalans.
Furthermore, President Bernardo Arévalo assures that this project provides an answer to the traffic problem in the City and other problems such as “the lack of quality public transportation.”
He thanked the US for its support in responding to these types of problems.

“We have to take the step to be able to live better in Guatemala City and the problems that this city that does not stop growing gives us,” said the president.
“Today we take a first big step in what will be the construction of our long-awaited metro in Guatemala City, a huge investment project that is one of our highest priorities,” Arévalo added.
He also said that “with the future metro we hope to provide a clear and practical solution for millions of Guatemalans who deserve to have a different daily life, because they have contributed with their efforts to build our country. This is the importance of the white line that is being built today.”
He reiterated that in that place (of supervision) one of the most relevant sections of the new metro will be located, “but it will be one of the links that our government will promote. The metro will travel more than 20 km connecting the northern axis and the southern axis of the City, passing through the vicinity of the Historic Center, with the coordination of the Municipality we will work together in this first phase.”
