A group of 25 economists, journalists and activists signed this Thursday a public letter addressed to the president of the United States, Joe Biden, in which they advocate the withdrawal of the economic sanctions imposed on the Venezuelan government.

“The economic sanctions and the policy of maximum pressure did not achieve their objectives,” argue the signatories, who assure that “75% of Venezuelans forcefully reject the sectoral sanctions and only 10% want them to be maintained. It is clear that these types of sanctions have not benefited the Venezuelan people.”

The statement is signed by: Alejandro Sucre, Alfredo Padilla, Andrés Rojas, Blanca Vera Azaf, Feliciano Reyna, Francisco Rodríguez, Jorge Botti, Jorge Makriniotis, José Guerra, José Antonio Gil Yepes, José Manuel Puente, Juan Ernesto Aguilera, Luis Vicente León, Leida Marcela León, Luis Oliveros, Manuel Sutherland, Marianela Herrera, Mariela Ramírez, Michael Penfold, Pablo Zambrano, Rafael Quiroz, Reinaldo Quintero, Ricardo Cusanno, Tamara Herrera and Víctor Álvarez.

The group highlights the need for political factors to resume “without delay” a negotiation process that, in its opinion, must follow “the route of what is possible, without proposing extreme positions that other parties find impossible to accept.”

In the communication, they ask the US government “to negotiate positions for the best interest of the Venezuelan people and to overcome the internal political pressures in the US, which, until now unfortunately, have hindered the progress of the negotiations.”

In this sense, they called for “reaching agreements that allow the return of Western oil companies and other private companies to rejuvenate the Venezuelan oil sector,” which they consider will generate employment and promote local production.

“The Venezuelan government must allow these companies to manage oil projects, their contractors and export revenues while receiving the corresponding royalties and taxes. The companies will contribute technology and capital to the sector”, they add.
