Last year, Africa overtook North and South America as a destination for Russian goods exports. The share of countries on the African continent has almost doubled – from 2.5% in 2022 to almost 5% at the end of 2023, and the share of the macro-region of America dropped from 3.5% to 2.9%, according to data from the Federal Customs Service (FCS).
According to the Federal Customs Service, in 2023, Russian exports to Africa in value terms increased by 43%, to $21.2 billion, while exports to the Americas decreased by 40%, to $12.2 billion.
In January-February 2024, exports to Africa amounted to $2.5 billion (a decrease of 2% compared to the same period a year earlier).
“Traditionally, the main export goods to African countries from Russia were wheat, petroleum products, chemical products, machinery and equipment. Indirect data show that this list has not undergone significant changes in 2022–2023,” notes IEP researcher. E.T. Gaidar Dmitry Kuznetsov.
In 2023, the export of Russian petroleum products to Africa almost doubled, and wheat supplies also increased significantly, Kuznetsov points out, citing data from various media (such statistics are now closed by the Federal Customs Service).
