This week, the Health Commission of the Lower House began to discuss two bills presented – together with a cross-sectional group of parliamentarians – by the representative for the Ñuble Region and member of said body, Marta Bravo (UDI), to incorporate social workers and Higher Level Nursing Technicians (TENS) and Dentistry Technicians (TONS) to the Health Code, as a way of recognizing the important work carried out by all health officials.

In this regard, the union parliamentarian explained that the modifications that have been made to the Health Code for more than one hundred years have not taken into account the evolution that has existed in the area of health during all that time. In this context, in her opinion, different professionals who are part of interdisciplinary teams, such as social workers, have been excluded.

But in addition, the representative of District 19 stated that the TENS and TONS also play a fundamental role that warrants their incorporation into said legal body, especially given how indispensable their work has become since the beginning of the health emergency due to covid. -19.

“This is a desire and an outstanding debt that has existed for years in our country, both with social workers and nursing and dental technicians. Nowadays, the work carried out by the members of an interdisciplinary team has become fundamental, and what corresponds – therefore – is that all of them can be incorporated into the Health Code, not only as a way of recognizing the indispensable role they play. , but also to guarantee that in the future we continue to have their support,” said deputy Marta Bravo.

Along these lines, the parliamentarian for Ñuble mentioned that the incorporation of said workers into the Health Code constitutes a desire for years, of which different government authorities have even committed to studying it. For this reason, following the beginning of the legislative processing of both bills, Representative Bravo called on the Executive and the Ministry of Health (Minsal) to sponsor it and commit to its approval, as a way of recognizing the role they play. .

“No one might argue that social workers and nursing and dental technicians fulfill an indispensable task in the health area. Since their inception they have become a key piece for any treatment, especially for the support they can provide to patients. That is why it does not seem logical to us that the authorities persist in not incorporating them into the Health Code, as is the case with the rest of the professionals. Here it is essential to give signs of recognition to health workers, and not exclude them in this way,” Bravo insisted.
