A bill was presented in the Chamber of Deputies which seeks to exempt the purchase of vehicles and supplies for firefighters from the payment of VAT.
In its foundations, the document emphasizes the voluntary nature of fire departments nationwide. It highlights that its main function is to attend, free of charge, emergencies caused by nature or humans, such as fires, traffic accidents or others.
Its financing is briefly based on State funds through the Budget Law. Also through contributions or donations, own activities and resources obtained in the provision of services other than responding to emergencies; as security consultancy.
Although it is recognized that the institution receives contributions from the public and private sectors and through its self-management, it is considered a duty that, from the political sector, greater legal tools are granted that allow them to continue exercising their function optimally and efficiently.
For this reason, the authors of the text call to evaluate the cost incurred by firefighters in the purchase of vehicles, equipment, tools and supplies. They point out that this must be seen from a strategic and fundamental perspective for the fulfillment of their work. They call, consequently, to declare them exempt from paying VAT.
In addition, the resolution recalls that, currently, there are 313 Corps throughout the country. There are approximately 57 thousand volunteers. These contribute tirelessly to the protection of the property and lives of the city’s inhabitants, even at the risk of their own lives.
