A small team from St Mary’s Hospital Center has been working for more than 15 years to recover hundreds of tons of medical equipment and objects so that they do not end up in the dump.
This recovery operation is led by Michel Perreault and a few volunteers from the CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île de Montréal hospital.
Mr. Perreault collects everything he can from the five CIUSSS hospitals, such as pencils, clips, paper, batteries and containers for medication.
“We focus on reducing waste,” he says.
Some equipment is even sent to Ukraine or Tunisia where it is reused.
“Ukraine is my number 1 recuperator,” says Mr. Perreault. [En Tunisie]they built centers for the homeless and they needed [de nos] armchairs because they are considered La-A Boy.”
Food waste is also in the sights of the recovery team.
For the past three years, a collaboration with the organization La tablée des chefs has made it possible to offer thousands of prepared meals to community organizations.
“It’s either fresh or frozen food,” he continues.
Styrofoam recovered by the team even ended up in the Champlain Bridge.
“I send them to a company that flakes them,” he says. They put [le procédé] under the asphalt of the Champlain Bridge to absorb [les chocs] and be an insulator.”
Michel Perreault would like to do even more in the future to revalue objects, and he hopes to become a model for society.
